Humboldt Toiyabe -
Spring Mountain

Encompassing all of the National Forest lands in Nevada as well as those in a small portion of Eastern California, the Humboldt - Toiyabe is the largest national forest in the lower 48. American Land & Leisure currently runs facilities in three ranger districts in this forest: the Carson, Bridgeport, and Spring Mountain Ranger Districts. The Spring Mountain National Recreation Area, known to locals as Mt. Charleston, is situated about 45 minutes northwest of downtown Las Vegas. This beautiful retreat from the city is known for its skiing, hiking, bird-watching, rock climbing, mountain climbing, and, of course, camping.

American Land & Leisure runs 9 different facilities in the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area.

Fletcher View Campground is located about 28 miles from Las Vegas at an altitude of 7000 feet. Set in a pine forest, this campground has 12 electric sites. Campers come here to breathe the cool mountain air and escape the heat of the city. Full hookups are provided to the campground managers. The area managers for the Spring Mountain area live and work at this campground. It is a salaried position. The campground is open from mid-May to mid-October.

Foxtail Picnic Area is located about 47 miles from downtown Las Vegas at an elevation of 8300 feet. Set in a pine forest, this picnic area has 3 large group sites. This is a developed facility with flush toilets. Water and sewer hookups are provided to the campground managers. Expect to work around 60 hours a week to care for this facility during the summer season. The facility is open year round, with campground managers on-site from early May to early October.

Kyle Canyon Campground is located about 23 miles from Las Vegas at an altitude of 6900 feet. Set along a creek on the floor of the canyon, this campground parallels the highway and has 25 single sites. Campers come here to fish in the creek, hike, mountain bike, and generally relax in the cool mountain air. Water and sewer hookups are provided to the campground managers. Expect to work between 20 to 25 hours per week to care for this facility. This campground is open from the beginning of April to the middle of October.

Cathedral Rock Day Use Area is located about 30 miles from Las Vegas at an altitude of 7600 feet. Set among pines adjacent to 3 hiking trails, this busy picnic area is run by three sets of hosts working together during the summer and one host couple during the winter. This is a developed facility with flush toilets. Water and sewer hookups are available to the campground managers. Hours are up to 20 hours per week per couple during the regular season and up to 30 hours per week per couple during the peak season. This day use area is open year round.

Hilltop Campground is located 40 miles from downtown Las Vegas at an altitude of 8437 feet. Set among pines overlooking the valley on the road that connects Lee and Kyle Canyons, this campground has 35 sites and an amazing view of the Mohave desert. Campers come here for that view, to hike on nearby North Loop Trail, and to relax in the cool mountain air and escape the city. Water and sewer hookups are available to the hosts. Hours are up to 20 hours per week per couple during the regular season, and up to 60 hours per week per couple during the peak season. This campground is open from the beginning of May to the beginning of October.

Old Mill Picnic Area is located 47 miles from downtown Las Vegas at an elevation of about 8300 feet. Set among pines in Kyle Canyon, this interesting picnic area was built on the site of an Old Mill. Some weekend tent camping is allowed. Water and sewer hookups are available to the hosts. Expect to work between 30 and 35 hours a week to care for this facility. The picnic area is open from early May to early October.

McWilliams Campground is located 50 miles from downtown Las Vegas at an elevation of 8300 feet. This rustic campground is set among pines and junipers and has 40 sites. Campers come here to hike and bike on the Bristlecone Trail. Full hookups are available to the campground managers. Expect to work between 40 and 50 hours per week per couple to care for this facility. This campground is open from the beginning of May to the beginning of October.

Dolomite Campground is located about 50 miles from downtown Las Vegas at an elevation of 8300 feet. Set in an open pine forest leading up to a ridge, this campground has 30 sites. Campers come here to hike and bike on the Bristlecone Trail. Water and sewer hookups are provided to the campground managers. Expect to work between 35 and 45 hours per week per couple to care for this campground. This facility is open from early May to early October.
