Butterflies basking in the sun in the Bolar Mountain Recreation Area in the George Washington & Jefferson NF
/A recent trip to see how preparations were coming along to open our campgrounds and day use areas in the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest led us to this peaceful moment on the beach. I believe these are the Virginia state insect, the tiger swallowtail butterfly. This isn't exactly a perfect example of puddling, but believe that is what they're doing in preparation for mating. I like to think they are just enjoying the view and sun on the Bolar Mountain Recreation Area Day Use Beach.
