Hummingbird Family in the Nest
/Thanks to Jennifer Wiltrout\Campground Manager and Tom Bright\Area Manager for finding this tiny family in Sam Owen Campground and sending us the photos.
It is difficult to distinguish the species of some female hummingbirds but we believe these are Rufous Hummingbirds. The female was the only adult seen around the nest.
Mom was first seen on the nest in the first week of June. The male takes no part in nesting or raising the chicks. The female uses small bits from bark and leaves, plant down from thistle, dandelions or cattails, spider silk, moss and lichen to make a sturdy nest that is well camouflaged.
These baby photos were taken June 29th. They grow up so fast!
